Week 9 - City exploring

Time to start with a fresh perspective! This week we had discussed the outcomes of last week’s research. We all had a question to research and two cities who do good when it comes to biodiversity.

To come up with good solutions, we have researched several major cities worldwide: Canberra, Melbourne, New York, Vancouver, Singapore, Stockholm, Tokyo, Israel, Cape Town, Manila, London, Brussels, Paris and Copenhagen. Where does biodiversity be considered? How do these cities deal with biodiversity? What measures or solutions are being applied? Etc.

It soon turned out that Singapore is the most biodiverse city in the world. Singapore contains the Tree House Condominium. This is the largest vertical garden in the world and an example of new ways to integrate habitats into dense urban spaces. In addition, there is Singapore's Garden by the Bay, which contains 18 manganese trees with steel trunks, which are vertical gardens planted with native ferns, orchids and other climbers.

Biodiversity is also very high in Cape Town. Cape Town contains a biodiverse Showcase Garden, featuring local plant species, animal images, interactive displays, demonstration rights, a khoikhoi display and more. The goal is not only to educate but also to inspire. In Vancouver, there is a Beaty Biodiversity Museum. This is a natural history museum and contains more than two million collected copies. In addition, TreeKeepers and Vancouver Park Board sell cheap trees for a green city. In an attempt to make Vancouver the "greenest city". New York contains a lot of State Parks and Historical Places. At these parks and places there are over 900 events of 358 different rare species and natural communities.

There is also an innovative Green New York Contractor, Landscape and Design company (Eco Brooklyn). This company is focused on turning New York green through low resource material usage and energy efficient constructions. In Brussels, they have placed several bins along the walls of the bank building, in order to place plants. A smaller concept in Melbourne, are the floating plants that purify the water and thus increase biodiversity. In London, a competition has been set up to make people think about improving green spaces in cities by using technology. There are also concepts that have not yet been implemented. For example, a building in Paris that is made to spread seeds of wild plant species.

Next week we will all have a little personal brainstorm for the concept. This gives everyone the opportunity to think about the problem on their own and create a personal vision, so we can think of it together next week.
